The brief

HG Walter is a family-owned premium butcher in the UK, delivering their high quality meat products to some of the finest restaurants and highly renowned chefs in the country.

HG Walter partnered with Oakley to design, build, and fit out a new 100,000 sq ft, future-proofed meat production facility.

As one of the UK’s leading butchers, HG Walter has experienced significant growth in recent years, driving the need to expand its production capabilities to meet increasing demand.

To support this next phase, the owners of HG Walter engaged Oakley from the initial design stage through to fit-out and final completion.

Our solution

Oakley’s turnkey approach gave the owners of HG Walter clear visibility at every stage of their expansion. With extensive design and build experience, Oakley delivered a smooth, end-to-end project tailored to HG Walter’s production flow, budget, and timeline.

An expansion of this size can be stressful, especially when having little experience in running a project of this nature.

In Managing Director Adam Heanen’s own words – “I’m good at meat, I’m not good at building, and for me to be out of my depth and trying to run this project, I think I would be a bit lost. To have experts take accountability for that, suits us naturally”.

 

Adam and the HG team were looking for a food industry design and build partner who they knew could deliver on the complexities of the project whilst being flexible to their needs. Throughout this project, Oakley collaborated closely with the HG Walter team, as well as their other partners—including their office fit-out contractors—to complete CAT A and other essential works ahead of their installation phase.

With Oakley on board, the owners of HG Walter were able to place their trust in an in-house design and build team that brought experts and professionals to the project – ultimately delivering an outstanding meat processing facility.

 

HG Walter’s new 3-storey 100,000sqft facility includes:

  • Butchery and meat picking rooms
  • Carcass rooms
  • Pallet and despatch fridges
  • Pallet freezer
  • Segregated meat processing areas and coldstore facilities for beef, lamb, pork, chicken, bacon, burgers, sausages.
  • Dry ageing fridges
  • Washroom facilities
  • Staff changing areas and welfare facilities
  • Goods lift and pedestrian lifts

 

Elements included within this project:

  • 3-storey concrete mezzanine installation
  • Substantial groundworks including new concrete slabs and heater mats for refrigerated areas
  • Drainage installation
  • Installation of white walling
  • Resin and vinyl flooring
  • Mechanical and electrical supply including large power upgrade to the building
  • Power supplies for equipment
  • Installation of refrigeration
  • Installation of rapid rise and personnel doors
